What Water does to your Basement or Crawl Space

Thursday, May 14th, 2020 by Abby Baldwin

Living in the south comes with its challenges. I personally have witnessed snow one weekend and the next weekend having temperatures of 75 or higher. The weather here is always changing, either it be thunderstorms, hurricanes, snow, ice, or anything else Mother Nature throws at us, it can happen. The best thing homeowners can do is prepare for whatever is thrown at us next. That’s where All-Dry of the Carolinas can help you!

Many might not think of their basement or crawl space as a high risk zone until it’s flooded and too late. Once a home floods, it can13 cause a lot of damage that can cost a pretty penny to repair. The best thing that homeowners can do is take proactive measures. Basements and crawl spaces are prone to taking in water, this is a fact. Hydrostatic pressure is the downward pressure of ground water falling subject to gravity. Here in the south we get a lot of rain, so when large amounts of water collect in the soil it starts to push downwards. Whenever this water hits an obstacle such as basement walls, pressure begins to build until the water can find a way to move downward. In most cases, water finds a weak point in the foundation such as a crack, and begins to pour into the space. Hydrostatic pressure is scientifically proven to happen, so the chance of water getting in the space beneath your home is high. Here at All-Dry of the Carolinas, we are able to waterproof your home so that when water comes into the area, it won’t flood and cause any damage. Damage of basement and crawlspace flooding includes but is not limited to: damage, high humidity, and pests.

Flooding of the basement or crawl space can cause cosmetic and foundation damage. As water enters the area it can destroy furniture, flooring, drywall, paint, and any other item that gets in the way of the water’s path. This is a problem for homeowners because it can cost up to thousands of dollars to repair or replace things. But if there is an is sue with the foundation, that can cost much more. Going back to the hydrostatic pressure, when water pushes that hard against a home’s foundation, it can cause it to weaken and separate from the structure. When the foundation begins to weaken, it can cause floors to bulge, crack, or split. Additionally, walls can crack and separate, and doors and windows may have issues opening and closing. If these problems go without treatment it can completely ruin your home.

High humidity can cause mold which is one of the most obvious signs of water intrusion in your home. Mold can cause odors, damage, and health risks for homeowners. Breathing is harder because the mold spores are in the air making it thick and musty. Mold will build up on surfaces that are close to water and have enough humidity to create a breeding ground. If someone has allergies, they are at risk of having some type of effect when exposed to mold. Along with mold, humidity will also cause high cooling and heating bills. As if having to pay to fix water damage wasn’t enough, the humidity in the air causes more energy to be used with your heating and cooling systems. The only way to protect your wallet would be to takes the steps to protect your home before water strikes.

Last but not least, water inside your basement or crawl space can lead to pest. All creepy critters love a place that is damp and cold. It works as a perfect hiding spot accompanied with a source of drinking water.
